Today, Congressman and Blue Dog Co-Chair Heath Shuler (D-NC) will offer the Blue Dog Benchmarks for Fiscal Reform as an amendment to Chairman Paul Ryan's fiscal year 2012 budget proposal. The benchmarks, released last week by members of the Coalition, are an aggressive set of targets for long-term fiscal reform and deficit reduction that includes cutting the deficit by $4 trillion over the next 10 years, with the largest deficit cuts in history by 2014.

With a budget battle raging in Congress, the Blue Dog Coalition laid out its benchmarks on Wednesday to cut $4 trillion from the deficit in 10 years while urging lawmakers to work together on a long-term plan.

The fiscally conservative Blue Dogs are suggesting lawmakers consider cuts to all parts of the federal government's budget, including defense, that could lead to the largest deficit cuts in history by 2014.

Rep. Kurt Schrader steps into the poisoned atmosphere of congressional budget talks today, offering an alternative spending blueprint he hopes will avert a government shutdown while shrinking historic deficits.

The plan carries the backing of the Blue Dog Democrats, a group of fiscally conservative lawmakers who hope to serve as a bridge between increasingly polarized Republicans and Democrats who are negotiating a spending deal. If the negotiators fail, the government could shut down April 9 when the current budget expires.

Today members of the fiscally conservative Democratic Blue Dog Coalition announced the Blue Dog Benchmarks for Fiscal Reform – an aggressive set of targets for long-term fiscal reform and deficit reduction that includes cutting the deficit by $4 trillion over the next 10 years, with the largest deficit cuts in history by 2014. The Blue Dogs also advocated keeping all options on the table in an effort to bring Republicans and Democrats together for a responsible, bipartisan discussion about the long-term fiscal health of the country.

U.S. Rep. Joe Donnelly plans to introduce a bill that would work to better match worker training programs to the needs of employers.

The American Manufacturing Efficiency and Retraining Investment Collaboration Achievement Works Act would prioritize existing federal work force training funds for educational programs that lead to industry-recognized credentials.

Today, members of the fiscally conservative Democratic Blue Dog Coalition announced their support for the "Reduce Unnecessary Spending Act of 2011," a measure introduced by House Budget Committee Ranking Member Chris Van Hollen that would require Congress and the President to work cooperatively to eliminate spending programs that are duplicative, inefficient and outdated.

Today members of the fiscally conservative Blue Dog Coalition announced that Katie Campbell will join the Coalition's staff as Blue Dog Policy Director. In her official capacity, Campbell will be working directly with Blue Dog members and staff, including the Coalition Task Forces, to promote Blue Dog legislative priorities.
