The Blue Dog Coalition is an official caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives comprised of fiscally-responsible Democrats, who are leading the way to find commonsense solutions. They are pragmatic Democrats, appealing to the mainstream values of the American public. The Blue Dogs are dedicated to pursuing fiscally-responsible policies, ensuring a strong national defense for our country, and transcending party lines to get things done for the American people.

WASHINGTON D.C. — Today, the Blue Dog Coalition issued the following statement after the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act became law. This comprehensive housing package includes several provisions aimed at reducing regulatory barriers to construction, increasing supply, and supporting housing in rural communities.

The same group of voters who elected me also went for Donald Trump, making our district one of only a handful in the nation to collectively split their ticket between a Republican for president and a Democrat for Congress.

Texas Rep. Vicente Gonzalez is part of a dwindling breed — he co-chairs the Blue Dog Coalition of moderate Democrats, which counts just 10 members in the current Congress. 

The ideological middle was a different place when he interned at the Capitol in the 1990s, according to Gonzalez.

“Back then, there were 50 or 60 Vicente Gonzalezes … where now, sometimes I feel like I’m almost totally alone,” he says.

As a law student, Gonzalez spent a summer as an intern for Rep. Solomon P. Ortiz, who represented Corpus Christi, Texas.
