Melancon: “It is critically important that we put our country back on a fiscally responsible path”

Today, Representative Charlie Melancon (D-LA), a leader of the fiscally conservative Democratic Blue Dog Coalition, issued the following statement after the Congressional Budget Office released its updated deficit projection.

"Today's CBO analysis is further indication that our economy is continuing to decline after years of fiscal mismanagement," said Melancon. "It is critically important, now more than ever, that the Congress and the administration develop a realistic plan for putting our country back on a path to fiscal responsibility. We have to secure our economy in the short term, but we cannot run trillion dollar deficits forever.

"We are already putting our economy and national security at risk by allowing so much of our debt to be held by so few. It is vital that we begin working to bring our books back to balance using tools such as statutory pay-as-you-go budgeting, and the Blue Dogs will work through the budget process to begin moving toward this goal," said Melancon.
