Blue Dog statement on resolution honoring Gabe Zimmerman

December 1, 2011
U.S. Representative Mike Ross, D-Ark., Blue Dog Co-Chair for Communications, today commended passage of H.Res.364 in the U.S. House of Representatives, which designates room HVC 215 of the Capitol Visitor Center as the "Gabriel Zimmerman Meeting Room." Zimmerman was the community outreach director for U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, and was killed when a gunman opened fire on January 8, 2011, at Giffords' congressional event. Zimmerman is the first and only congressional staff member to have been slain in the line of duty.

"Today, the House of Representatives honors and recognizes Gabe for his hard work and commitment to the people of Arizona's 8th congressional district. Like Gabby, Gabe was a dedicated public servant who went to work every day to make a difference in people's lives. Gabe was fiercely loyal to his friends and colleagues and he leaves behind a void that can never be filled. But, today's action by the House will forever recognize this incredible person and will serve as an endearing tribute to all public servants who work hard to solve problems, get things done and make this nation better for the next generation."

The fiscally conservative Democratic Blue Dog Coalition was formed in 1995 with the goal of representing the center of the House of Representatives and appealing to the mainstream values of the American public. The Blue Dogs are dedicated to a core set of beliefs that transcend partisan politics, including a deep commitment to the financial stability and national security of the United States.
