Blue Dog leadership on bipartisan letter to ‘Super Committee’

November 2, 2011
Today, members of the Blue Dog Coalition leadership team issued the following statements in support of the bipartisan letter sent by members of the House to the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction.

"The American people have demanded that Members of Congress put the extreme partisanship aside and come together to do what is right for the fiscal future of our nation," said Congressman Heath Shuler (D-NC). "Today, 100 of my colleagues from both sides of the aisle are doing just that by standing together to send a simple message to the Supercommittee: Go big. The Supercommittee has the rare opportunity right now to come up with the $4 trillion solution we need to achieve long-term fiscal reform and bring stability back to the economy. The task ahead of them will be challenging, but we are here to let them know we have their backs."

"I'm proud to be a part of this effort by Republicans and Democrats to cut the deficit. The American people have long demanded that Congress get its act together and work toward common-sense, bipartisan solutions to our budget crisis," said Congressman John Barrow (D-GA).

"This letter is an honest, bipartisan effort by members of Congress on both sides of the aisle who have the political will to put country before party," said Congressman Mike Ross (D-AR). "The Blue Dogs have said all along that we support a grand bargain providing for at least $4 trillion in deficit reduction over the next 10 years. At a minimum, we have to achieve this level of savings if we are going to put our country back on a fiscally sustainable path, grow our economy and put Americans back to work."

"The majority of Americans expect us to come together as Republicans and Democrats to act in the best interest of the country. Today, the members of Congress who signed this letter proved that a bipartisan majority can, in fact, come together to accomplish our goals and put our country back on track." Ross added.

The fiscally conservative Democratic Blue Dog Coalition was formed in 1995 with the goal of representing the center of the House of Representatives and appealing to the mainstream values of the American public. The Blue Dogs are dedicated to a core set of beliefs that transcend partisan politics, including a deep commitment to the financial stability and national security of the United States.
