Blue Dog Coalition Statement on Military Action in Venezuela

WASHINGTON D.C. — The Blue Dog Coalition issued the following statement in response to the US military operation to seize Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

“The events of the past week have made clear that strong man governments are like castles built on sand – they are weak, and easily overcome. Our Constitution explicitly delegates war powers to Congress, and durable engagement must not occur without consultation of the people’s representatives,” said the Blue Dog Coalition. “Given the track record of this administration, there are legitimate fears that this scenario could devolve into a grab bag for the President’s richest friends. Congress cannot default to partisan behavior when national security and long-term foreign policy are at stake. We must remain committed to protecting the ideals of our Constitution – both at home, and abroad."
